Summary
Elspeth Spindle is one of the few who made it through the deadly fever. A fever that if survived, leaves you infected with a magical ability. In Elspeth's case, a magic power and a curse. The Nightmare has poisoned her mind and she must remain hidden, lest the tyrant King discovers her and kills her like he did all the other "infected". Upon discovering her ability to see the coveted Providence Cards, Ravyn Yew, Captain of the Guard, demands she assist him and the rebels in obtaining all 12 cards. A feat that will allow them to overpower the King and save the "infected" from death.
My Review
Wow! This book exceeded all my expectation. A truly original story, with a beautiful gothic setting, loveable characters and passionate romance. I was genuinely sad when I finished the book because I didn't want it to be over. Rachel Gillig is a master at creating an incredible atmosphere that you can never get enough of.
Starting off with some amazing characters. Elspeth is not your typical Fantasy FMC warrior, assassin, champion fighter who takes no shit. She is gentle. Sweet. Yet still has some of that fire we love in a main character. Her contrast to The Nightmare is was makes their "relationship" so intriguing. A very interesting way of showcasing Elspeth's curse, Nightmare acts almost like her intrusive thoughts. Poking up randomly and she just wants to shove them away, yet when she succumbs...watch out.
Next up is Ravyn Yew. He quickly became a favorite MMC for me. Strong, brave, daring. All the things you want for the male lead.
The romance in this book is really one of my top favorites. This is not an enemies to lovers, nor is it an instalove. The love story is perfectly paced and comes so organically it feels real. There are no explicit scenes in the book, however there are a few steamy scenes that fit in well with the flow of the story. Passionate and romantic, the main love interests will have you unable to put this book down!
If you've heard of One Dark Window, I'm sure you have heard of it's unique magic system. The concept of the card based magic is very interesting and easy to follow. Nothing crazy and complex that makes it impossible to understand. Our plot centers around the characters finding all 12 providence cards so they can defeat the King and save the infected from execution. A solid storyline that keeps you intrigued the whole way through the book. With the little twists and turns, it's never a dull moment.
If you love a gothic fantasy setting, romance and want a change from Fae and Shadow Daddies, One Dark Window is your next read!
